But it has been reported that Nia Vardolas, 55, the Canadian-American actress who has Greek ethnicity is splitting from her American husband, Ian Gomez just less than 2 months before her silver wedding anniversary.
Nia Vardalos files for divorce
It is said that Nia Vardalos filed her divorce papers at the LA County Californian Superior Court on 3 July 2018 and the reason she has cited is ‘irreconcilable differences’.
She has also put in her court papers that they have been staying separately since 29 June 2017. She has requested both joint legal as well as physical custody of their adopted daughter.

The couple was married on 5 September 1993 and this year would have been the silver jubilee of their wedding.
It has been stated that their decision to end their togetherness is mutual and carried out in an amicable manner. They gave a joint statement to ET in which they said:

“We’ve been respectfully separated for a lengthy period of time. Our relationship became a friendship so the decision to end the marriage is completely mutual and amicable. It is our hope that decency will prevail on the reporting of this story which will soon be yesterday’s news. Thank you for respecting our privacy.”
Nia Vardalos, in the meantime, wants to focus on her career and had earlier posted a picture on her social media in which there was a feather pen and she had captioned this post as:
“See you later, I’m going into my writing cave.”
Nia Vardalos and Ian’s relationship
Nia and Ian who is an actor tied the knot in 1993 on the 5th day of September. Ian Gomez had starred in shows such as Cougar Town and Felicity. Nia and Ian had problems with primary infertility.
They struggled with it for many years. Various options were tried such as in-vitro fertilization treatment and adoptions.
Their IVF failed 13 times and they also had many unsuccessful adoption attempts. Ultimately, in 2008, they could adopt a female child whom they named Ilaria.
Nia Vardalos and her career
Nia was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. She started as a small-time actress and her biggest hit came with her role in ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding’.
This was a commercial success and was also critically acclaimed. She earned innumerable awards for it. She also bagged a role on CBS called My Big Fat Greek Life.
In 2009, she ventured in the direction of I hate Valentine’s Day. Her next My Life in Ruins on the life of a misguided tourist guide was also a moderate success.
Her joint project with Tm Hanks called Larry Crowne was also a commercial hit. She has done some voice acting and has performed some songs.
She co-wrote and also acted in My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 which was released in 2016 in the month of March. Though less successful than the first one, it managed to make good money. She with her husband has been presenting the show called The Great American Baking Show.
